Stress has become one of the silent killers of people in today’s world. There are many different types of stresses that people can suffer from; and these stresses are deteriorating people’s wellbeing to such an extent that they are becoming victims of several physical and mental ailments. Stresses can arise from work, family relations, financial problems, education problems, appearance of the body, physical state of the body, etc. There are so many stresses that is difficult to discuss all of them under one heading.

In simple terms, stress can be defined as the condition when some aspect of the human body – either physical or mental – is aggravated beyond a particular limit. It can have several repercussions on people, such as:-

Feelings of isolation, frustration and depression

Raising the level of the blood cholesterol and blood pressure, which can cause fatal cardiovascular diseases

Lowering the immunity of the body, making it vulnerable to other diseases

Lowering the mental capacity of the person

Since there are different types of stresses and there are different methods to tackle them, let us study them individually.

(1) Emotional Stress
This is the stress caused due to emotional issues in relationships including conflicts, romantic rejection, separation and even death. The extent of emotional stress depends from one person to another. It all depends on how emotionally balanced the person is.

Emotional stress generally affects the heart and the brain. It can bring about a change in the eating and sleeping patterns of the individual. Most emotionally unsettled people overexert their brain by thinking constantly of the issue.

From an Ayurvedic point of view, emotional stress is placed in the category of Sadhaka pitta vitiation. This is a sub-dosha of the pitta dosha which looks after the functioning of the heart.

The following dietary points can be considered to bring about a reduction in emotional stress:-

Eat sweet foods to bring the mind back to a balanced state. Sweet and juicy foods are very beneficial.

Every night before going to bed, drink a cup of warm milk with some rose essence and its petals in it.

Use cooling spices such as cardamom, coriander and mint in the diet.

Get a good head massage done with either coconut oil or with sandalwood oil.

Include bitter and astringent foods in the diet.

Do not stay up late at night.

(2) Mental Stress
Mental stress occurs when the person overexerts the mind or uses it in a wrong way. This is also known as negative stress or distress. This is caused due to overwork, planning too much, thinking excessively about something, making destructive schemes or conspiracies, etc. This is a very dangerous type of stress, because in the long run, it would affect all the faculties of the brain and prevent it from functioning properly.

Vata dosha is responsible for mental stress. In particular, the prana vata is responsible. This is the sub-dosha of the vata dosha which is responsible for the normal functioning of the brain.

The following dietary guidelines can help to get relief from mental stress:-

Sweet, sour and salty foods must be had as they help in balancing the vata dosha.

Milk and dairy products must be included to a fair amount in the daily diet.

Preferably, all foods must be cooked in a little ghee.

Get a full body massage done, particularly with ksheerabala taila or dhanwantari taila.

Get adequate sleep per day, for about eight hours in the least.

(3) Physical Stress

Physical stress or strain occurs when the body is excessively used, such as by too much exercising or by performing too much hard labor.

Symptoms of this type of stress are pain in several parts of the body, loss in memory and concentration, inability to focus on things, unclear vision, etc.

This is by far the most important of the three types of stresses, as in this all the three doshas can be vitiated. Shleshaka kapha can cause problems in the proper lubrication of the joints and vyaana vata can tamper with normal circulation of blood in the body, along with pitta vitiation. Since vata and kapha are the more affected doshas, steps are taken to balance the vata and to make the kapha stronger.

The following dietary rules can be obeyed to achieve this purpose.

Have cooked apples once a day. These are great stress-busters.

Other foods that are good for removing physical stress are coconuts, almonds, ghee, milk and almost all dairy products.

Massage your own body with oil everyday.

Use of the shirodhara therapy is considered useful. This is done by lying flat on the ground, while a pot full of oil is hung right above. A hole is made in the bottom of the pot such that oil from the hole drips right on the space between the two eyes

There are numerous skin diseases, complaints and general ailments that can be contacted, with conditions such as Psoriasis, Eczema and Utrauna probably the most common.

They can be caught in a number of different ways, with allergies, over exposure to hot conditions, genetic disorders and mental stress and fatigue being the most common.

None are fatal nor contagious, however swift treatment is advised, as depending on the severity of the attack the spots, blemishes and itches caused by these conditions can be very uncomfortable for the sufferer and the slight disfigurement that occurs to the skin can make you self-conscious of your appearance.
Ayurvedic Causes of Skin Diseases
In Ayurvedic eczema is caused by a major aggravation in kapha coinciding with slightly more minor unsettlements in vata and pitta. Ayurvedic considers eczema to be a minor form of leprosy and so the factors that cause that will be present to a certain degree within eczema albeit on a much smaller scale.

Psoriasis and Urticuria are considered to be caused by outside disruptions, though these external factors do cause some aggravation in pitta and vata.
Psoriasis is bought on by emotional problems poisoning the internal system and thus dirtying the blood, which then manifests in rashes and skin problems on the body’s surface.

By and large Urticuria is caused by allergies, which causes both the external and internal bodies to react in the same way as with psoriasis.

Ayurvedic Remedies for Skin Disease
As stress and other mental fatigues are big factors in the development of skin disease you should do all that you can to avoid them.

Simple things like keeping to a regular sleeping pattern can work wonders on this score.

Yoga, meditation and other breathing exercises can steady the body and allow you to find a sense of stillness and of being at one with the world.

You should also try washing with Ayurvedic soap, particularly those containing neem extract. Not only will the essential oils within scrub the skin gradually clean of the outbreak, but it is also very soothing to luxuriate in.

Purging as Ayurvedic remedy for skin disease

As the bloodstream has become poisoned by negative toxins it needs to be purged, in order so it can be cleansed and become pure again. In Ayurvedic there are five different methods of purging the self.

The method recommended for skin disease is vierchan.

Supplements needed for vierchan purging.

•Senna leaves
•Flex seeds
•Psyliam husks
•Triaphala
They should be made into a paste and ingested with one or more of the following foodstuffs,

•Cows’ milk
•Castor oil
•Rasins
•Mango juice
Ayurvedic diet as remedy for skin disease

Recommended foods are:

•Curds
•Boiled vegetables
•Pumpkin
•Fruits and fruit juices
Foods to avoid or at least be consumed in moderation

Ayurvedic Treatment of Arthritis
(Painful Joints)

Arthritis is one of the most common ailment for which Ayurvedic help is being sought these days.

Causes
This ailment is caused due to the aggravation of Vata (air) dosha and accumulation of Ama (toxins). Ama gets deposited in the weak areas of the body, joints with a simultaneous aggravation of Vata that is known as Ama Vata (arthritis).

Disease Process in Arthritis

According to Ayurveda mostly pains are caused by the aggravation of vata (air) dosha. Arthritis is a condition which is caused by accumulation of ama and aggravation of vata. (Ama is a toxic by-product of improper digestion.) This ama circulates in the whole body and deposits or gets collected at the sites which are weaker. When it deposits in the joints and at the same time there is aggravation of vata, it results in a disease called amavata. This amavata is arthritis.

Remedies

As described above ama and vata are the main causes, so efforts should be made to digest ama and to reduce the vata. The digestion should be improved so that no further ama is produced. Efforts should be made to relieve the pain and inflammation. This is the line of treatment according to Ayurveda.

Fasting is very beneficial for digesting the ama. The fasting be complete or partial depending on the strength of the person, season and place. Two tea spoons of lemon juice mixed in 250 ml. of warm water and a tea spoon of honey is good to take twice a day -morning and evening.

Body massage with sesame or mustard oil helps to reduce the vata and thus reduce the pain. The joints affected by pain can be massaged for longer time.

Light exercise is useful but you must know your limits: as a general rule if any exercise, including walking, causes pain after one hour, you have crossed your limit.

Liberal intake of orange juice or sweet limejuice or Vitamin C enhances the efficacy of any anti rheumatic drug, since Vitamin C can reduce skeletal pain.

Guggul is a very helpful herb for curing arthritis. If available it can be taken in one to 3 gm dose twice a day after meals with warm water.

Contra-indications:
Not recommended for people with kidney disease or acute rashes.

Diet and Regimen

Foods which are easily digestible and do not make wind or gas are good. Vegetable juices and soups are good. Juices of carrot, beat root and cucumber mixed together is also beneficial. Green salad with a dressing of lemon juice and a little salt is also good. Fruits like apples, oranges, grapes and papaya can be taken. Cooked vegetables like squash, zucchini and pumpkin are good. Cooking with spices like cumin, coriander, ginger, asafetida, garlic, fennel and turmeric is also helps a lot.

Avoid eating hot, spicy and fried foods, sweets, wind forming foods like cabbage, cauliflower, spinach, broccoli, okra and potatoes should be prohibited. Avoid taking too much tea, coffee, alcohol, white sugar, yogurt, chocolate and cocoa, excessive smoking, sleeping during day time, staying up late in the night and mental tensions like worry, anxiety, fear, stress and grief etc., should be given up. Regular physical exercise and every day massage with oil, once or twice a week, should form an important part of life style.

Ayurveda
Treatment of depression by western psychiatry has several shortcomings viewed from the eastern point of view. Most medications for major depression have strong side effects. No effective treatment exists for people who are just feeling temporarily low. There are no ways to prevent depression from the allopathy point of view. About half of the people treated for depression experience a recurrence or relapse.

In contrast, ayurvedic methods of treating depression are gentle, natural, and effective. They contribute to a long-lasting state of balance that reduce the tendency toward recurrences. It offers a more complete understanding of the nature and causes of depression. Ayurveda offers a more effective treatment of depression without negative side effects and the real possibility of prevention. It promotes higher levels of psychological health. Ayurvedic methods not only increase the balance in the body, they also progressively raise the overall level of inner contentment. This is a natural antidote to depression.

Western antidepressant medications typically require a minimum of three weeks to take effect. Ayurvedic treatments, though gentler, begin to produce results more quickly, within a few days or even a few hours. The two treatments are compatible. (If you use the herbal treatments prescribed in Ayurveda, make sure that there is no interaction with the antidepressants and check with your doctor before taking any herbs if you are taking prescription medications.) Ayurvedic treatments, if used complementarily, may help you to reduce your antidepressant dosage ultimately. Do this only with the approval of your doctor after reviewing all facts.

Causes of Depression From Ayurvedic Perspective
From the standpoint of Ayurveda there are two main causes of depression.

An imbalance in the three doshas, Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

A lack of awareness of one’s deeper, inner Self.

From the Ayurvedic point of view, most depression is a kapha imbalance that is the culmination of vata and then pitta going out of balance. Initially the brain’s electrochemistry has an erratic overreaction (vata imbalance), which triggers a loss of enzymatic activity in the metabolism (pitta imbalance). Kapha responds by trying to glue everything down, bringing about heaviness, darkness, and stagnation that the mind-body interprets as the negative message of hopelessness and depression. In other words, because of specific etiological factors, vata from the colon, pitta from the intestine, or kapha from the stomach enters the general circulation and lodges in the nervous system, interferes with normal functioning of the mind and nervous system, and causes depression.

Sometimes depression is a pitta disorder. Allergies and the breakdown in metabolic processes they lead to can also disturb brain chemistry. This can cause dramatic mood swings, with depression as one of the consequences. Vata imbalance also can cause depression.
