Diabetes Treatment in Ayurveda

The sweetness of urine diabetics is due to increased blood sugar level which leads to spillage of glucose into the urine. The sweet urine of diabetic individuals attracts various flies, bees, ants, etc. Hence, Diabetes mellitus is a clinical disorder in which blood sugar levels are abnormally high known as Hyperglycaemia. It occurs due to absence or insufficient production of Insulin. This is a chronic condition and usually lasts for lifetime. It has to be kept well controlled. Diabetes mellitus is known as “Madhumeha” or “Prameha” in Ayurveda also known as “rich man’s disease” because people who are over nourished and sedentary lifestyle usually get this condition.

In today’s stressful modern living, incidence of Diabetes is definitely increasing. It is a very common disease, affecting an estimated 150 million people worldwide Every now and then we come across patients of diabetes seeking Ayurvedic treatment and advice. Here is a brief description of Prameha- diabetes. It is an endocrine disorder causing various metabolic changes in the body leading to severe complications such as damage to the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart and blood vessels. If it is not well managed daily, medical emergencies can arise. The numbers of diabetics are increasing rapidly and we can foresee that the day is not far, when number of individuals affected by diabetes will double.

  1. It is a chronic metabolic disorder in which the body is unable to make proper use of glucose resulting in hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) and glycosuria (sugar in urine).
  2.  Poorly managed diabetes can lead to a many long-term complications like heart attacks, strokes, blindness, nerve damage, amputation of limb, impotency in men.
  3. Pruritus (Itching), permenant loss of vision. Recent studies have revealed that if we keep our ‘blood sugar’ close to normal, there is a chance to save oneself from it’s complications.
  4. According to Ayurveda prameha is mainly kapha dosha.
  5. If any form of diabetes is not treated well then Madhumeha (Diabetes Melitus) can develop.

    Triggering Factors :

  1. Meals which include sugar, fats, potatoes, rice increases kapha dosha.
  2. Lack of exercise and sedentary life style.
  3. Mental stress and strain. Excessive sleep etc.

Symptoms :

Frequent  urination, burning of palms and soles. Feeling of hungriness, large appetite, excessive thirstiness, sweet taste to mouth, weight loss, blurry vision, wounds taking longer time to heal, skin infections, pruritus, unexplained extreme fatigue.

Diet Planning :

Diet Planning is the cornerstone of managing diabetes. The diabetic diet is an otherwise normal balanced diet, with a few modifications and proper spacing between food intakes.

  • Regular exercise- One of the methods to heal prameha include strenuous exercises. Regular walking or any exercise is a must.
  • On can go for regular asanas In ‘Yoga’
  • Body weight – Restrict and reduce weight.
  • Sleep Pattern – Avoid sleeping during daytime.
  • Habits – avoid smoking and alcohol
  • Lifestyle – Try to make changes in your daily life style such that to reduce stress.
